Where To Begin
Congratulations, you've made the decision to remodel your kitchen, bath or living areas. Now the hard part, you don't know where to begin! It may seem like your lists and choices are endless.

Don't worry, just follow some simple guidelines and take our advice. You'll be on your way in no time!

1. Decide What You Want
  • What is your main reason for wanting to remodel? Do you need extra space, are you cabinets outdated and falling off the walls, improve your living space or maybe for health reasons?
  • Ask your family what they need and would like and why.
  • Do you have options? Can you expand to the front or back yard or can you just redesign the existing area?
  • What matters the most to you? Figure out what needs changed and what you could keep or just update.
  • Make sure to consider the short and long term implications of your renovation decisions. How long do you plan on living in this house, will your choices increase or decrease the house's resale value?

2. Collect Ideas and Gather Information

  • Search through magazines, books and the internet to get ideas and the look you would like.
  • Make a folder for all your pictures and ideas.
  • Go to home shows or visit open houses of builders for ideas. TV shows are also a great place to look.
  • Talk with anyone that has remodeled in the past. This could be your family members, friends or co workers. Just start asking around, you'll find someone who has gone through this process.

3. You Need to Determine Your Budget

  • This could be the most important step in my opinion. So many times homeowners don't have a realistic idea of the costs involved in remodeling. Your heart can be broke once you realize you can't afford it, this is after all the work you put in to designing it.
  • Figure out what you are willing to spend the most money on.
  • How much can you afford? Can you and are you willing to borrow money?

These are only some suggestions and you can use them for a starter point if you like. You may already be working with a designer, architect or other professional service for your needs. Please let me know how I can be of assistance to you.
